Harapan rejects NOC, repeats call for emergency to end

Pakatan Harapan has rejected a proposal by their former chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad for a National Operations Council (NOC) government similar to the one in 1969.

"As a party that upholds parliamentary democracy, Harapan rejects the NOC based on our consistent stand that the state of emergency needs to end immediately.

"(We also call) for Parliament to re-open now," the coalition's presidential council said in a statement this morning.

The statement was jointly signed by the heads of PKR (Anwar Ibrahim), Amanah (Mohamad Sabu) and DAP (Lim Guan Eng).

The NOC was a 10-member council that governed the country after the 1969 riots.

Mahathir mooted re-establishing the council during his audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong yesterday, saying it would help bring stability to the country amid the emergency.

However, the former prime minister was doubtful the council would be formed as the King insisted such a suggestion would have to come from the government.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's principal private secretary Marzuki Mohamad has spoken out against the NOC, as have Umno leaders.

PKR operatives said they have been aware of the NOC proposal before it became public knowledge.

Mahathir confirmed he spoke to Anwar in late May but did not reveal if the NOC was discussed.

The conversation led to the nonagenarian penning a letter to the palace, initiating the talks between the King and political party leaders which have been ongoing since Wednesday.

In their statement today, Harapan added that the solution to the Covid-19, economic, and political crises was a strong functional democracy - and that solutions should be hashed out in Parliament. - Mkini
