KOTA KINABALU: Most of the new Covid-19 cases in Sabah were from close contacts, a worrying trend due to the possibility of a wider outbreak.

Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the state recorded 254 new cases today, a decrease of 64 cases compared to 318 yesterday.

"Of the 254 cases, 184 were from close contacts, 20 were from cluster screening, 36 from symptomatic screening, six from targeted screening, and eight from other screenings," he said in a statement.

He also said Sabah recorded two deaths in Kota Kinabalu and Kinabatangan but no new cluster.

Masidi said Tawau remained with the most cases at 46, followed by Kunak (40), Kota Kinabalu (31), Sandakan (29), Lahad Datu (22), Papar (15), Penampang (14), Kota Belud (13), Kudat (12), Beaufort (six), Kalabakan (five), Semporna (five), Telupid (four), Kinabatangan (three), Putatan (two), Keningau (two), Kota Marudu (two), Tuaran (one), Tenom (one) and Tambunan (one).

No cases were recorded in seven other districts – Kuala Penyu, Ranau, Sipitang, Nabawan, Tongod, Pitas and Beluran.

"Based on the trend of Covid-19 cases in Tawau district which is still at a worrying level, roadblock operations will be tightened in Tawau and Kalabakan districts.

"The enforcement personnel will not compromise with any party that violates the SOP of the Sabah Movement Control Order," he said, adding that the number of green zones in Sabah had dropped to three today from four yesterday. - NST
