Covid-19: Infectivity rate now highest since pre-total lockdown

The Covid-19 national infectivity rate is now higher than what it was before the total lockdown which took effect on June 1.

Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah disclosed that the infectivity rate as of yesterday stood at 1.11. This is the highest since May 31 when the infectivity rate was at 1.12.

The infectivity rate crept above 1.0 since June 29 and have continued to climb.

It must be kept under 1.0 to prevent an exponential growth of new Covid-19 cases.

As of yesterday, the states with the highest infectivity rate are Putrajaya (1.19), Perak (1.17), Selangor (1.16) and Kuala Lumpur (1.16).

Other states above 1.0 are Kedah (1.13), Pahang (1.11), Sabah (1.10), Terengganu (1.08), Malacca (1.05) and Negeri Sembilan (1.04).

The Covid-19 situation has deteriorated despite the Covid-19 lockdown with several indicators hitting record highs yesterday.

This includes the number of new cases yesterday (9,180), the number of patients in the intensive care unit (959) and those who are intubated (465).

The number of active cases also broke 80,000 yesterday. - Mkini
