More groups join hands to help Malaysians in need

Three youth organisations have launched a fundraiser for their 'Projek Rakyat Kenyang' to assist more Malaysians facing income loss under the current enhanced movement control order period in most parts of Selangor and certain areas of Kuala Lumpur.

The groups - StandUp Malaysia, Arus Anak Muda and YPolitics - said their crowdfunding initiative launched on July 2 aims to raise RM15,000 in nine days to purchase food baskets for distribution among the needy.

They said applicants need to submit details of their request and a secretariat member will respond for verification and distribution.

"We are certain that Malaysians can see for themselves there are a growing number of people going hungry, growing number of people losing hope, and more who needs help.

"Therefore, we were prompted to collaborate to start the Rakyat Kenyang programme and provide food aid for Malaysians around the Klang Valley," they said.

The groups in a statement also said their initiative follows similar efforts mobilised under the raise a white flag campaign, all with the aim to help the needy overcome a sudden or long-term loss of income which led to cut off food supplies.

On June 28, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had announced that the existing food basket programme would be expanded to include all opposition MPs, who would each be allocated RM300,000 to provide food baskets for their constituents who are in need.

Several Harapan MPs, including Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh and Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah, however, had questioned the list of contents provided by the government and that MPs should be given more leeway to select the best deals for the recipients.  - Mkini
