Sabah’s exclusion from list a slap in the face, says SAPP chief

Yong Teck Lee said it was unfair that Sabah was not included among the five states which will enjoy relaxation of movement restrictions from Monday.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s exclusion from Phase Two of the national recovery plan (NRP) is a slap in the state’s face, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Yong Teck Lee said today.

He said it was unfair that Sabah was not included among the five states which will enjoy relaxation of movement restrictions from Monday.

Yong had earlier tweeted, “It is the beginning of the end … unless federal shows respect to Sabah” after the announcement of the list by senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob and finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz.

Yong, who is also a Perikatan Nasional deputy chairman, said he felt let down by the federal government as Sabah’s request for relaxed SOPs is yet to be approved.

However, he noted that Putrajaya had yet to reject the request.

SAPP is a component of the ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah state government.

Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Perak and Perlis move into Phase Two from Monday.

Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor had previously announced that several social and economic activities would be allowed in the state, among others, dining-in at restaurants, hotels and other eateries from June 29.

However, the absence of a revised set of SOPs and rumours of operators being fined (which were proven untrue) forced many to return to serving only takeaways.

Ismail later reminded all states to abide by the regulations set by the National Security Council.

Sabah local government and housing minister Masidi Manjun said the state had submitted a new set of SOPs for Phase One of the NRP to the federal government, but it had yet to be approved.

Warisan vice-president Junz Wong renewed calls from his party for the GRS state government to make a stand over the SOP issue.

He said Warisan backed GRS’ efforts to pursue Sabah’s autonomous rights for the benefit of Sabahans. - FMT
