PN ministers dismiss 'failed state' claim by Bloomberg columnist

Two Ministers in the Prime Minister’s Department Redzuan Yusof and Mustapa Mohamed have separately dismissed claims that Malaysia may be on the way to being a failed state.

They said while there are challenges due to Covid-19, the country still has a functioning system.

“There is still law and order, the government and its delivery systems are functioning, there is no sign that the system is breaking down.

“Yes, there are challenges because of Covid-19, there are some restrictions on movements, but society is still functioning," Redzuan (above) told news portal Free Malaysia Today.

The special functions minister was rebutting the claims of Bloomberg columnist Daniel Moss, who argued that political instability, poor management of the Covid-19 pandemic and the white flag movement by Malaysians asking for aid were a sign of the country's slide.

Redzuan said that throughout the country, a lot of resources are being disbursed and certain economic sectors continue to operate.

"People are free to go out to get essentials, go to the bank and so on.

“There is no clampdown on criticism of the government. People are not denied their right to lodge police reports against anyone, including government leaders.

“This won’t happen in a failed state or in a country headed that way," he added.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mustapa Mohamed

Meanwhile, Sinar Harian reported Mustapa as being similarly dismissive of the claims.

“There is a report from Bloomberg saying that Malaysia is on the way to becoming a failed country.

"If a country fails, then some of its people will starve and so on. Among the countries that have failed before are Somalia, Myanmar and some countries in Latin America.

“We have done our best and our institutions are moving, the Health Ministry is moving, government officials are all working as usual and everything is working,” said the Jeli MP while handing out food aid in his home base in Kelantan.

He added that Malaysia and its government were not paralysed and that public administration was still continuing as per normal. - Mkini
