As Umno MPs bicker over PN, MCA reiterates loyalty to BN

MCA president Wee Ka Siong said his party was committed to BN and the coalition's collective decision which was made through a consensus.

This came following suggestions from former Umno president Najib Abdul Razak warning MCA not to forget their friends.

Wee (above) said in March last year, the BN supreme council had decided to support the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government en-bloc and adopted a "no PKR and no DAP" position.

This position was reaffirmed when the MCA national delegates finally got to meet in March this year, he added.

"MCA supports BN's collective decisions. As long as BN's position does not change, MCA will uphold any decision made through consensus in BN which has been in practice so far," he said on Facebook.

On July 29, BN lawmakers met in Parliament to come up with a common stand.

"Most BN MPs attended, including Najib, who is the BN advisor, (Deputy Prime Minister) Ismail Sabri Yaakob, (Senior Minister) Hishammuddin (Hussein), (PBRS leader) Arthur Kurup and I.

"I support the collective decision of the BN MPs at the meeting because it was in line with the BN supreme council's decision in March last year," Wee added.

The MCA head did not elaborate on what was decided by the BN MPs during the July 29 meeting.

On Aug 3, the Umno supreme council decided to withdraw support for PN and Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Wee suggested that Umno's change of heart was not communicated to BN's leadership yet.

"BN is our common platform. Many might be unaware that BN component party decisions will eventually be brought to the BN supreme council for consideration. That has always been the mechanism.

"I pray that the close ties between BN component parties will continue for the sake of multicultural Malaysia," he said.

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak

Yesterday, Najib had alluded that MCA was "forgetting its friends", citing how Umno had always helped MCA, including in the Tanjung Piai by-election campaign in November 2019.

To emphasise his point, Najib shared a video clip of a Malay woman dressed in BN colours campaigning for the MCA candidate in the rain.

It is believed that Najib was referring to Wee's decision to support a rebel group of Umno MPs who refused to heed the Umno supreme council's decision to withdraw support for PN and Muhyiddin.

To this, Wee said MCA has not forgotten the woman either. Identifying her as "Kak Sham" from Kota Tinggi, Johor, Wee revealed that he had contacted her several times before.

"Moreover, on July 11, the Johor MCA secretary Ng Keng Heng had represented our party in visiting Kak Sham at her home.

"How could our party forget those who have helped us?" he asked. - Mkini
