Johor sultan upset, 'begs' for faster Covid-19 vaccinations

Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has again expressed his disappointment at the rate of Covid-19 vaccinations in the state.

He last made a similar comment on June 23.

In a statement yesterday, the sultan rued that he had to “beg” for an improvement.

“As the Johor sultan, I am responsible and have been entrusted to take care of my people. Lives cannot be traded.

“I am always thinking about the suffering of my people, especially those who fall ill with Covid-19 and those who have passed away.

“The worrying state of the virus has become worse with the spread of Delta variant cases. The strategy is very clear, we must vaccinate as many of the state’s population as possible, as quickly as possible," he said in a comment to the state’s Royal Press Office.

“It is very disappointing when we almost have to beg for the vaccination rate to be ramped up for the safety of our own people,” he added.

According to the Special Committee for Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV), 45.1 percent of the Johor adult population had received one dose as of Aug 3 while 17.8 percent were fully vaccinated.

Compared to other states and territories, Johor was behind eight of them for the one dose vaccination rate.

It had the second-lowest vaccination rate for two doses, just ahead of Sabah.
