MCA refuses to follow Zahid's lead, spells out loyalty to PN govt

MCA is determined to implement BN's resolution to support the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government until the next general election, the party's political bureau announced after its meeting yesterday.

While this was a position adopted by BN last year, the coalition's dominant party, Umno, has seen sharply contrasting views on its ties with the leadership of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and his government.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi led a group of 11 MPs on Tuesday who announced that they were withdrawing their support, while another group of Umno lawmakers met and said that they were continuing to back Muhyiddin.

MCA, which has two seats in Parliament, has resolved to maintain the status quo.

“The facts and reality are evident; not one party or coalition can form a stable government if the PN government falls right now. It will only drag the country into yet another deep end of a political crisis, to the detriment of the people and country.

"MCA is of the opinion that the decision of the prime minister to table a vote of confidence on the legitimacy of his position when Parliament convenes in September - a move assented to by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong - is the right one," the party said.

Umno and MCA first teamed up in 1952 and formed the Alliance coalition with MIC to win an overwhelming triumph, with 51 out of 52 seats in the 1955 general election held prior to Merdeka on Aug 31, 1957.

However, since 2008, people's support for MCA has eroded rapidly from 30 parliamentary seats it once held to just two.

While the Umno leadership under Zahid has shown increasing discontent with Muhyiddin's performance as prime minister, MCA has not displayed any unhappiness or dissent.

Nevertheless, MCA called for an end to the movement control order (MCO) in its current form.

"At present, we are still facing the Covid-19 pandemic and a sluggish economic situation. Political stability is key to protecting lives and livelihoods.

"MCA also believes it is time for the government to reopen the economic sector in stages, given the successful rollout of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme and reaching its targeted goals," it said.

The party added that the MCO has not been effective in reducing the number of infections and that prolonging it would only serve to compound the distress of the people who struggle to make a living.

"A comprehensive approach to vaccinating the population still remains the best way for our country at the moment,” it said. - Mkini
