Shafie: Agong wants new PM's legitimacy to be tested in Parliament

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong wants whoever is chosen as the new prime minister through the MPs’ statutory declarations (SDs) to have his or her legitimacy tested in Parliament, Warisan president Mohd Shafie Apdal said.

Shafie said the king expressed this during the meeting between the ruler and all political party leaders yesterday afternoon.

“These SDs involving 220 MPs in our country are to explain and state who is their candidate of choice to become prime minister.

“And after that, if one of the leaders is chosen, then His Majesty will call to ensure the SDs are truly giving support to the chosen candidate.

“After that, once there is a candidate who is appointed as prime minister, it has been decreed for this matter to not only be decided through the decision, but also to be brought to Parliament for confirmation.

“In Parliament, it will then be confirmed that this is the accepted candidate and after that we want stability,” Shafie said in an interview with Astro Awani last night.

He said the king had also told the party leaders that this does not mean that the “winner will win all” as there needs to be unity during this time of trial for the nation.

The Agong had reminded them to ensure continuity for matters like the 12th Malaysian Plan and the forthcoming budget as well, he said.

All party leaders were invited to an audience with the Agong yesterday afternoon, after Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation as prime minister the day before following his loss of majority support in Dewan Rakyat.

Muhyiddin is currently serving as caretaker prime minister.

It was also reported yesterday that Istana Negara has instructed the MPs – through a letter from Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun – to submit their choice of prime minister in writing by 4pm today.

Under Article 43(2)(a), the Agong has to appoint a prime minister who “in his judgment is likely” to command the confidence of the majority in the Dewan Rakyat. - Mkini
