Covid-19 deaths (Oct 3): 109 reported fatalities, lowest in 69 days

 

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry's Github data repository reported a total of 109 Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Oct 2), bringing the cumulative death toll to 26,565.

This is the lowest number of reported deaths in 69 days.

From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 30.3 percent or 33 died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.

Penang recorded the highest number of new deaths at 18, making up 16.5 percent of the newly reported fatalities.

The remaining deaths were in Sabah (13), Selangor (13), Johor (11), Perak (10), Sarawak (9), Terengganu (9), Kedah (8), Kelantan (5), Pahang (4), Kuala Lumpur (4), Perlis (3), Malacca (1), and Negeri Sembilan (1).

No new deaths were reported in Labuan and Putrajaya.

A total of 89 out of the 109 reported deaths or 81.7 percent happened in the last seven days.

The remaining deaths happened more than a week ago but were only recorded yesterday due to delays in data reporting.

Compared to an average of 312 Covid-19 deaths in the last 30 days, there was an average of 201 deaths in the last seven days, indicating a downtrend.

As of yesterday, there were 155,823 active Covid-19 cases. This is a reduction of 18.6 percent from the 191,434 active infections a week ago.

Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has fallen by 40.6 percent from 262,543.

The Health Ministry's post-midnight update also provided further insights into the new Covid-19 infections yesterday.

From the 10,915 new cases yesterday, 656 could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.

From the cluster-linked cases, 380 (57.9 percent) were from workplaces while 194 (29.6 percent) were from community transmissions.

Another 79 (12.0 percent) were from clusters linked to high-risk groups such as old folks' homes.

The remaining cases (2 - 0.3 percent) were traced to clusters related to detention centres and education institutions (1 - 0.2 percent).

Previously, the Health Ministry released deaths statistics together with the number of new Covid-19 cases in the evening. This had since changed.

Deaths statistics are now released after midnight along with other more detailed data. Malaysiakini reports them in the morning.
