Sindumin assemblyman leaves Warisan
KOTA KINABALU: Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob has left Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) to become an independent lawmaker in support of the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah government.
It is learned that Dr Yusof, who is also the Warisan Information Chief, decided to leave the party last night.
He is believed to have been disappointed with Warisan "losing direction", a party he joined since the its inception in 2016.
Dr Yusof is expected to make an official announcement on his action next week.
A source close to the Sindumin Warisan chief, said Dr Yusof also left the party because he wanted to continue helping the people in his constituency.
"Datuk wants to help people in his constituency only. So it is good for him to be independent and support the current government. At least he can speak out," he said.
In the 16th State Election on Sept 26 last year, Dr Yusof defended the Sindumin seat with a majority of 424 votes defeating Barisan Nasional and four other candidates.
Previously he won the seat under the Warisan ticket in the 14th General Election (GE14) in 2018.
He was then appointed as the state Education and Innovation Minister until July last year when the Sabah State Assembly was dissolved.
Prior to joining Warisan, Dr Yusof was an Umno leader and held several positions including Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives when he was the Member of Parliament for Sipitang from 2004 to 2007. - NST
