Seatless PAS ready to face Malacca polls

 

Amid speculation of upcoming Malacca state elections, PAS has formed a state election committee to better strategise their game plan.

Party president Abdul Hadi Awang took to Facebook to also express regret over the dissolution of Malacca’s state assembly, as well as to announce the members of the election committee.

“PAS has followed the political developments in Malacca and expresses deep regret over the dissolution of the Malacca state assembly unexpectedly during the recovery period of this pandemic.

“PAS expresses its readiness to face any eventuality, including facing the state election if implemented.

“Hence, PAS has set up a Malacca state election committee to formulate strategies to face the election.

“The committee is chaired by PAS vice president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar with the assistance of the PAS Central Election Department and the Malacca PAS Liaison Body,” he said.

PAS won its first and only Malacca state seat so far while contesting alongside DAP and PKR in the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat coalition during the 2013 elections.

Mohd Khalid Kassim represented the Bukit Baru constituency for a term before losing the seat to Amanah in the 2018 elections.

The assembly has 28 seats. The recently dissolved state government had 17 assemblypersons - Umno (14), Bersatu (two), and one BN-friendly independent.

The opposition had 11 seats - DAP (seven), PKR (two), Amanah (two).

The dissolution occurred after four state lawmakers led by Sungai Udang Umno assemblyperson Idris Haron withdrew support from the state government.

The other three were Nor Azman Hassan (Umno-Pantai Kundor), Noor Effandi Ahmad (Bersatu-Telok Mas), and Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Independent-Pengkalan Batu).

It is mandatory to have a snap election within 60 days of the dissolution of a legislative assembly.

However, there is debate on whether to conduct an election due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. - Mkini
