After Texas win, Malaysian Lyia Meta sways Hollywood
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian singer-songwriter Lyia Meta, who is surprisingly not recognised in the country for her talents and international awards, continues to impress the music industry in the US.
She has received a Hollywood music awards nomination for jazz, three weeks after winning two big prizes at a Texas country music festival.
Meta is among eight jazz artistes shortlisted in the music genre category at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards (HMMA) on Nov 17.
Last month, Meta was voted Female Vocalist of the Year and Virtual Entertainer of the Year after participating via a pre-recorded show at the Texas Sounds International Country Music Awards in Jefferson.
The Malaysian government had refused her financial support to perform and promote Malaysian tourism at the US event.
The HMMA respects composers, songwriters, and music supervisors for their work in music for film, television, and videogames.
The music genre category honours artistes without media who have had a global presence.
Meta was nominated for “Sing a Sad Song”, from her latest EP “15013,” written by Los Angeles songwriter Denise Dimin.
Dimin told FMT: “Lyia had the vision and passion to take each of my five songs and make them her own, each with its own distinctive feel and groove, morphing between genres and styles.
“Sing a Sad Song was just that, a sad song, and sad songs always run the risk of being brooding or maudlin but Lyia was able to bring a touch of wistfulness into the acceptance of a relationship that was over.”
She said Lyia’s production collaboration with Nashville producer Bob McGilpin brought a musical lilt to a “breakup song that makes the listener feel like we’ll all get through it.”
Meta said two songs of the six songs from the EP, 15013, were currently on the first ballot for the Grammy Awards.
They are: “This One’s For You” (Best Improvised Jazz Solo); “Daylight” (R & B Performance); while the EP is contesting the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
“Daylight” was a finalist at the Rome Music Video Awards 2021 in the original song category while the EP has received praise in Rolling Stone India and continues to get positive press.
“To say I am honoured would be an understatement. This is another one for Malaysia,” said Meta.
The HMMA nominations have historically been representative of the nominees and winners of the Golden Globes, Oscars, Grammys, and Emmys that occur months later.
Recent HMMA winners who won Oscars include Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross & Jon Batiste for “Soul”, Hildur Guðnadóttir for “Joker”, Ludwig Göransson for “Black Panther” and Alexandre Desplat for “The Shape Of Water”, as well as songs from “Judas & the Black Messiah”, “La La Land” and “A Star Is Born”.
Songwriter nominees at this year’s HMMA include singing icons Carole King, Van Morrison, Brian Wilson, Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Eddy Vedder and Jay-Z.
Films nominated in score, song, on-screen performance, and other genre music categories include Don’t Look Up, Cyrano, King Richard, Dune, No Time to Die, The Power of the Dog, CODA, Respect, Parallel Mothers and C’mon C’mon.
Composers receiving multiple nominations include Hans Zimmer, Nicholas Britell, Amie Doherty, Bryce Dessner and Aaron Dessner. - FMT
