Harapan 'infighting' never as bad as Umno-Bersatu spat, Lee reminds Faizal

Pasir Pinji assemblyperson Howard Lee has reminded Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Faizal Azumu that any internal tension within Perak Pakatan Harapan had never triggered an allied party to attack its own partner, as what had happened between Umno and Bersatu.

The Harapan Youth chief pointed out that Faizal (above), who is also Bersatu deputy president, was removed as Perak menteri besar through a motion initiated by an Umno lawmaker, the party’s new partner in Perikatan Nasional (PN) after defections which led to a change in the federal government.

Faizal was first appointed Perak menteri besar under a Harapan state government and Lee, a former state exco, denied Faizal's reported claims of having to “manage” daily quarrels between DAP and Amanah, alongside PKR and Bersatu.

“Maybe he (Faizal) has forgotten that numerous times when there was a matter arising with no consensus reached among the four parties, he would be the one trying to pit the excos against one another.

“This situation not only occurred between different parties but there were times it happened between those from the same party,” Lee said in a statement.

He was responding to Faizal’s remarks reportedly made in a live-streamed ceramah on Thursday as part of PN’s campaign for the ongoing Malacca polls.

“As an exco in the government that he (Faizal) led, I can confirm that even though there was tension among individual members, DAP and Amanah never fought.

“At the very least, even if there were fights between Amanah and DAP, they were never like the ones between PAS, Umno and Bersatu in Perak, until the menteri besar from Bersatu was toppled by a ‘friend’ from Umno,” Lee said.

He revealed how Faizal purportedly tried to convince DAP, PKR and Amanah excos who raised concerns over the environmental impact of a proposed non-radioactive rare earth elements factory and a crude oil refinery, that there were those among the parties who agreed to the project.

“Eventually we found that none of it was true and was mere fairy tales created by the MB (Faizal),” he added.

Lee said, at the end of the day, any fights that led to a consensus decision is usually known as a debate and it is the nature of a democracy.

Similarly, he said any fights in the interest to come up with the best decision is also a part and parcel of politics.

“For as long as Amanah, DAP and PKR have been together, it is undeniable that each party regularly brings up differing views and opinions.

“But at the end of the day, we still embrace the spirit of having different opinions, while ultimately defending a consensus decision made,” he said. - Mkini
