BN and PN are at war, says Anwar

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Anwar Ibrahim has warned voters in Melaka that Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) are “at war”, amid worsening ties between Umno and Bersatu.

He also raised the spectre of further political instability in the state should either BN or PN win enough seats in the polls on Saturday and form the state government.

“Both these coalitions would continue to jostle for power no matter the result of the election. This will happen whether PN wins or BN wins,” he said during an online ceramah.

“They are at war now. The war is tight between BN and PN. They talk about unity and harmony, but they are fighting on the ground.”

Despite BN and PN leaders working together in the federal government, BN lynchpin Umno had previously said it would not work with Bersatu – the dominant party in PN – for the Melaka state election and the 15th general election (GE15).

In an interview last Thursday, PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin reportedly said that BN’s “time had come to an end”, leading to sharp rebukes from several Umno leaders.

Among them were BN chairman and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who said that former prime minister Muhyiddin’s statement vindicated Umno’s decision not to work with Bersatu in GE15.

Bersatu was part of PH before pulling out from the coalition in February last year, leading to the collapse of the 22-month-old PH government. Muhyiddin was subsequently named the country’s eighth prime minister but resigned 17 months later after Umno retracted its support for him.

Noting that the current infighting between BN and PN would have an effect on the federal government, Anwar said this was evident when a Bersatu minister and an Umno deputy minister both held campaign events in Melaka at different times.

“One in the morning, one in the evening. Same place, different parties,” he said. “My friends, let’s teach them a lesson.” - FMT
