'Why are they still here?' GPS man asks as PAS confirms Sarawak contest

A senior leader of GPS lynchpin party Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) has reportedly made light of PAS’ plans to contest the upcoming Sarawak election.

According to The Borneo Post, PBB vice-president Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah (above) questioned why the Islamist party bothered to field candidates when most ended up losing their deposits in previous elections.

“Why are they still here? I don’t know.

"I don’t know what they want.

“Same goes for parties based in Peninsular Malaysia, they should stay there and do not need to come here and disrupt things here, that is my opinion,” he was quoted as saying during a doorstep in Kuching yesterday.

During the 2016 Sarawak election, PAS lost all 11 seats it contested.

Seven candidates forfeited their deposits.

Earlier this month, Sarawak PAS said that it will again contest 11 seats this time namely KemenaBeting Maro, SamariangPantai DamaiMuara TuangSadong JayaSebuyauJepakLambirPujut and Samalaju.

The party later backtracked to say the list was not confirmed.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man

On Friday (Nov 26), PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man confirmed that the party will in fact contest the Dec 18 Sarawak polls but said the number of seats had yet to be finalised.

“PAS will contest in Sarawak and we will decide on the number of seats after talks with Sarawak PAS this weekend.

“PAS is confident that Sarawakian voters will vote for our candidates, who comprise Sarawakians from various fields of expertise and prominence,” he told party mouthpiece Harakah Daily.

This almost certainly means the Perikatan Nasional (PN) component party will clash with GPS as the latter is contesting in all 82 seats up for grabs.

GPS is not formally part of PN but backs it at the federal level.

Great that Bersatu sitting out

Karim welcomed the decision by PN lynchpin party Bersatu to sit out of the Sarawak election.

“In my opinion, it is a great decision.

“As a friend at the Parliament level that formed the federal government together, when the state election is held in Sarawak, it is best to leave it to Sarawak to handle.

“Bersatu has not taken root here and they are still new, as before this, they were not in Sarawak,” he said.

Bersatu’s Sarawak chapter was launched in December 2018.

As for speculation that BN will field candidates in the upcoming election, Karim dismissed such talk as “fuss” fabricated by alleged cybertroopers.

“For me, what was portrayed in social media is the work of naughty children.

“I don’t think they will come here. We have faith in those who run BN. They will not do naughty things like that,” he added. - Mkini
