‘Tonto’ menace: RTD to expand dragnet in Penang, Kedah and Johor

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Road Transport Department (RTD) will expand its operation dubbed, ‘Op Cantas Khas Tonto’, to three other states following its success in routing several organised ‘tonto’ syndicates on April 26.
RTD director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said apart from the Klang Valley, Negeri Sembilan and Perak – the focus of the operation’s first phase – Penang, Kedah and Johor had also been identified as areas where tonto activities were known to prevail.
He said close cooperation with the police fuelled the success in wiping out ‘tonto’ syndicate based on different areas of enforcement of the RTD and the police.
“It is a continuous effort. More arrests will be made…at the moment, the syndicates appear to have slowed down their activites, but we have our own strategy (to arrest ‘tonto’ syndicate members).
“Individuals involved in the syndicates have been identified, there are many things that I cannot reveal but it (the Op Cantas Khas Tonto) is still going on,” he told reporters after launching the 70th RTD Day celebrations here yerterday.
Also present at the event was Terengganu RTD director Abdul Rahman Emang Anyie.
He said besides the ‘Op Cantas Khas Tonto’, the RTD had also been liaising with the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in combating fake licence and cloned vehicle syndicates.
On action to be taken against RTD personnel involved in channelling information about the operation to ‘tonto’, Ismail said those found guilty would face the full wrath of the law. — Bernama
