Telecommunications service providers urged to play role in addressing global issues
KUALA LUMPUR: Tele-communications service providers (TSP) should play their role in addressing global issues such as climate change, in line with efforts being undertaken by the government.
Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia Datuk Jailani Johari said TSPs who constantly interact with the public can play a role in effective resource management.
Jailani, who is leading the Malaysian delegation to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Geneva, said the government and the private sector have been working to address climate change since 2009.
“Based on the National Objective Policy under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the government and the private sector have collaborated in in addressing climate change and the environment by focusing on Carbon Management, Waste Management and Resource Management,” he said in his keynote speech at the conference on Tuesday.
The collaboration include initiatives such as ‘Green ICT’ and ‘e-Waste’.
“Malaysia recognises the role played by the ICT industry in addressing global issues. In line with the aspiration to become a developed nation by 2020, the government will remain committed to meet the objectives of the Eleventh Malaysia Plan (2016-2020), in the preservation and sustainability of resources in environmental issues and climate change by the ICT industry,” he said.
At the conference, Malaysia won five awards from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) including for ‘Kemaman Smart Community’ project under the Information Infrastructure and Communication category. — Bernama
