Mamadou Sakho UEFA ban update; hearing date named

Liverpool’s French defender Mamadou Sakho will be told within three weeks whether he faces a lengthy ban for testing positive for a ‘banned’ substance.

Currently, he’s free to play after serving an initial, voluntary 30-day suspension – with his lawyers originally postponing the case having argued that the fat burner he consumed shouldn’t have been on the banned list in the first place…

UEFA have undertaken their own investigation, and will let Sakho know their findings and have named July 2 the date for the disciplinary hearing.

Sakho missed a number of key games at the end of last season, and Euro 2016 in his home country as a result – so if he’s found innocent – expect him to sue UEFA for loss of reputation and personal loss.

As a club, Liverpool are only likely to enter the transfer market for another central defender if Sakho receives a significant ban. If he’s free to play, we’re more than covered with new signing Joel Matip, youngster Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren as well – although Martin Skrtel is still expected to leave.
