Amanah No 2 praised for banning politics in agriculture ministry

Salahuddin Ayub says party politics has no place in the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry.

PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya should make it a rule to bar ministerial staff from taking part in political events related to their ministers and deputy ministers, said vocal retired army officer, Brig Gen (Ret) Mohamed Arshad Raji.

Arshad, who heads the National Patriots Association (Patriot), said such a policy would stop abuses that were rampant in the past, and prevent government machinery from carrying out roles outside its scope.

Arshad lauded Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Salahuddin Ayub for instructing staff of his ministry not to attend any of his political events.

Salahuddin, who is the Amanah deputy president, said the ministry’s assets should not be used for political purposes.

In an interview with TV3 last week, Salahuddin gave the assurance that political interference would not have a place in his ministry.

“There is no need to wear clothes with political parties logo when we go to the ground to meet our stakeholders. I want to restore the dignity of government officers,” he was quoted as saying.

Arshad praised Salahuddin for showing “understanding and knowledge of his dual role” as a minister and a politician.

“Salahuddin’s statement can be regarded as a hallmark of a true politician, one that does not take advantage of his ministerial position to project oneself as a caring and a worthy politician,” said Arshad.

He said department heads must now issue specific instructions to all staff, defining government duties and political tasks.

“We have seen in the past where head of departments would issue instructions to subordinate staff to attend political events of ministers, simply to ensure large crowds at the events,” he said. -FMT
