MCA can still be an effective opposition

It is unfair for Pakatan Harapan to counter MCA’s criticisms with attacks on its logo or saying the party lacks credibility due to its past failings.

This country needs a vibrant opposition, period. No amount of “self-righteousness” and altruism is going to keep the government from wandering off the track. A few months of Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) rule are sufficient to show that all governments need effective opposition.
In the past, MCA was pathetic and I think everyone knew it. That is why the party is now licking its wounds in the opposition. I think there is no need to harp on this any further.
The MCA may have performed poorly as a ruling coalition partner but does this mean the party can no longer play its role as an effective opposition? I think we ought to reserve judgement on this.
When MCA criticises the ruling parties, the onus is for the ruling parties to answer to the criticisms. It is unfair to counter MCA’s criticisms by pointing out that the party’s logo looks like a durian or the party lacks credibility due to its past failings. This is almost akin to an ad hominem argument.
Similarly, DAP and all PH component parties were very effective when in opposition. They knew how to pick the right issues and they were very good in criticising the government. If they have been an effective opposition, does this mean they can be an effective government too?
Maybe PH is better than Barisan Nasional/Umno, at least for now, but surely the former can’t be flawless and perfect. Surely there are policies and decisions made by the PH government that need scrutiny and criticism. I think nothing can be more effective in pointing this out than by an effective opposition.
Very rarely the government would provide checks and balances on itself. To assume so is wishful thinking, more so with the supremacy of premiership still very much alive in our country.
MCA can be an effective voice of the opposition despite its lack of illustrious past. MCA’s strong party machinery is still intact. The best reform and revival effort the party can ever undertake is to be an effective opposition. Focus on issues and criticise factually and constructively. I am sure the people will appreciate it.
