‘SOSMA WILL BE REPEALED ONE WAY OR ANOTHER – IT’S JUST A QUESTION OF TIME’: TOMMY DROPS BOMBSHELL – ‘SOME CIVIL SERVANTS INCLUDING HOME MINISTRY OFFICERS & EVEN SOME CRIMINAL LAWYERS RESISTING MOVE TO ABOLISH NAJIB’S DRACONIAN LAW’
THE Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 will be abolished as it infringes on civil liberties, said Attorney-General Tommy Thomas.
However, it will take some time for the government to repeal the preventive detention law as it has the support of enforcement agencies and civil servants, he added.
Thomas gave his assurance at a public forum today as critics of the government questioned why the Pakatan Harapan administration has not repealed the law despite promising to do so during the GE14 campaign.
He said it was only a question of time before the law is repealed.
“There is some resistance from civil servants, home ministry officers, towards repealing it. I am surprised that there are criminal lawyers from the Malaysian Bar who also do not want it repealed.
“But it is against civil liberties so it will have to go, but it will take time,” he told the forum organised by the London School of Economics Malaysian Alumni Association and the Institute of Democracy and Economic Affairs.
SOSMA, which was originally aimed at fighting terrorism, allows the authorities to detain suspects for 28 days.
However, human rights campaigners have claimed that enforcement agencies have abused SOSMA’s provisions to unfairly detain individuals, including political dissenters during the Barisan Nasional administration.
Thomas today responded to concerns that SOSMA detainees were being held for more than 28 days as their trial dates were being delayed by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).
He was asked whether the AGC could address these complaints while the administration goes through the process of repealing SOSMA.
As a temporary measure, he urged those who were affected to write to him.
“Write in to me, make sure it is handed to me personally and I will act on it. That is the temporary measure.”
Some 215 SOSMA detainees being held at the Sungai Buloh prison have been on a hunger strike since 8am yesterday to demand that the PH administration fulfill its promise to abolish the law.
According to Malaysiakini, some 200 family members of those detainees had also mounted a protest in front of the prison demanding that their relatives be released.
