Yoursay: Scaled-down AGM a chance for Umno to reflect and reform
YOURSAY | ‘It will be a surprise if KJ can get a slot to speak his mind.’
Ferdtan: Umno's glorious past is gone. Sad to some, but a relief to many, for the country had been destroyed by its corrupt leaders who had ruled the country for the past 60 years.
By voting them out, we thought that they would change for the better, but no. They still play up the “3R” issues - race, religion and rulers. Worse still, they roped in PAS into the divisive game of dividing the nation.
In the past, the nation's policies were announced at Umno national delegate assemblies, instead of, by right, in Parliament or cabinet. The idea was, “Umno is government and government is Umno”.
Where were MCA, MIC and the rest of the coalition partners in BN?
The previous carnival-like annual event is no more probably due to:
1. Lack of interest. Common people are attracted by the attention paid to the event, due to the artificial hype of the media. They are like bees that see honey they just can't stay away from.
2. Lack of money. It is not cheap, the way it was done previously - expensive door gifts, sponsored trips, free accommodation and free meals thrown in.
3. Umno, led by its new president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, is probably afraid of facing its members by shortening the number of days for the events from five to two, because Zahid expects hard questions and criticisms from the floor by the youths and those led by “reformist” Khairy Jamaluddin, the former Umno Youth chief.
Alas, until today, Umno is still the same party that refuses to change. There goes the desire of wanting an effective and responsible opposition.
Clever Voter: One will expect the turnout to be substantially less. The main reason is simply that there is a lower budget.
Secondly there will probably be much fewer opportunities for those rent-seekers hoping to leverage on who's who.
Interestingly, it would be strange to see Umno not be able to use state-owned facilities for their media and communications.
Umno warlords will likely reinforce the misplaced notion of the country being threatened by recent developments. It will be a surprise if Khairy can get a slot to speak his mind.
Roger 5201: It is very clear to the rakyat who voted in Pakatan Harapan where Umno has gone wrong.
I sincerely hope this AGM is a time for reflection and introspection by Umno members over what needs changing to make the party relevant again.
Odysseus: This year, there won’t be any traffic jam in the Putra World Trade Centre area. I wonder how many chartered buses will be around this year.
Since cash is scarce, the enthusiasm will dwindle. Attendance will drop because there will be no cash and free gift incentives.
What remains a mystery will be Zahid's speech. Will he blame former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak for their defeat in GE14, or ask Umno to take collective responsibility for the defeat?
Shanmugam V K Subrayan: The simple reason is that there is no more free (taxpayer's) money to throw around.
It will be interesting to see how many actually show up at the meeting. It is not in Umno-Baru culture to use their own money to attend meetings.
StevenForMalaysia: I'm sure there are cleaner and more moderate Umno members.
What has happened is their past leaders’ fault, and they, being always spoon-fed, have had no alternative.
I hope they will now slowly come out of the ashes and be strong to help build our beloved nation.
HKTan: Will the rituals of chest-thumping, keris-wielding, racial and religious rhetoric be the main acts of this circus show which was aired over the national media almost 24/7 using the rakyat's money when they were in power?

Maybe they will cast away all the rubbish and make some intellectual plans to reform and undo the gross mistakes of the past.
Kevin: This is the “New Malaysia” that we hope for. It's a good start from the supreme ruler of Malaysia.
Instead of bestowing awards this year, His Majesty should revoke awards from those who have betrayed the nation and brought embarrassment to the country and disgrace to the title that they were bestowed.
Bummer: Many recipients are undeserving and they use their titles to abuse lower ranked officials and traffic rules.
Gerard Lourdesamy: The system should be revamped like in the UK. Have an Honours Committee under Parliament or the state legislative assemblies where the public can make recommendations for consideration before the names are passed to the rulers or governors for their approval.
Also, it should not just be the government but also the opposition, civil society, NGOs, religious bodies, trades unions, universities, et cetera that should be allowed to nominate names to the committees. The personal quota of the rulers and governors should be severely restricted.
Other than honours that are deemed to be in the personal gift of the rulers or governors, all other honours must be conferred on the advice and with the consent of the prime minister, menteri besars and chief ministers as the case may be.
People should only receive such honours for exceptional public service, innovation or bravery.
The granting of honours, titles and dignities should be the exception and not the norm. As it is, we have become a nation riddled with tan sris and datuks.
StraightTalker: A great move indeed. In the long term, this move will hopefully revive the prestige and recognition of the title-holders. Only the deserving will be entitled. -Mkini
