WHY DO MALAYSIANS DISLIKE NAJIB SO MUCH?

I am a Malaysian Chinese. I was optimistic when Najib started as Prime Minister. I liked his concept of ‘1 Malaysia’ and his promise of reforms. I really wished him success in achieving his self-proclaimed goal of becoming a transformational leader. I willed myself to overcome cynicism with optimism and to give Najib the benefit of my doubts.
But I was disappointed before too long. ‘1 Malaysia’ has been largely replaced with a blatantly Malay agenda. Reform has become mostly talk or propaganda and little action or achievement. I realize that what he seeks all along was the appearance of reform rather than real reform. My feelings towards him changed from disappointment to dislike, as he upped corruption sums from millions to billions and insisted that he is so likeable that some people would give him billions of ringgit as gift.
I try to cling on to hope by remembering something Najib also said when he became Prime Minister: change or be changed. But I am convinced that the re-delineated electoral constituencies would help BN, UMNO and Najib to cling on to power on the basis of Bumiputra votes alone — and even if a larger majority of voters voted against BN than in the last election. I think or fear that the courts will clear away all the legal challenges to the re-delineated constituencies to allow them to be presented for parliamentary approval and to be used in the coming national election. To Najib, it is no longer ‘change or be changed’ but ‘no change and not be changed.’
In short, I dislike Najib for not doing what he promised or for raising and dashing my hopes, for increasing corruption and for further manipulating electoral constituencies to cling on to power even with only minority support. Lim Hong Hai, former Retired University Lecturer
NO ONE LIKES A PARASITE
For one, he is his father’s son. And his father was idolized for putting in place draconian measures to ensure Malaysia’s apartheid regimes.
For another, he represented and was appointed for exactly those same values. Which made him guardian and caretaker of a racist organization responsible for polarizing the population of a multi cultural country.
And most of all, for putting up a facade that made him look benign and even benevolent at times, while furthering the same policies that prey on minorities.
It is only because the very same people who benefitted from these policies for more than half a century didnt get their fair share of 1MDB that his entire party took a tumble. IF the illicit Gains of 1MDB had been distributed evenly among the halal Muslim Malay population, UMNO would still be buying Art Deco and Rennaissance paintings. Hardly any of the Malays that voted against the incumbent racist entity that UMNO is were there to address any racial imbalance previously existing. They were simply pissed at not getting a fair share of the 1MDB cake. So now you start to hear dialogue about how dishonest Najib is. From Malays. Saying what the minorities have been saying all along. And catalysed by the fact that minorities are no longer inclined to keep quiet.
I get feedback that the Chinese and the Indians and the Orang Asal (Aboriginals) are far too sensitive these days.
No they are not.
Do they over react when Najib whips up a dagger and validates his horde with the threat to bathe the dagger in blood? Yes he did that. And so did many of his empowered cohorts. So the minorities reacted. Does that sound too overt? Are the minorities being overly sensitive? In the good old days, we would put our heads down and mutter. No one would have said a thing. How can they? The Malay controls the police, the army, the press and the judiciary. What changed? Those that rule with fear, must one day see that fear subside, and the residue that remains is hate. In other words, people stop fearing what is an everyday thing. Those who live with cobras learn to handle them.
Yes, not all Malays and Muslims oppressed us. How many defended us as fellow citizens? A handful. How many said that taking from Chin and Muthu to give to Ali is not halal? THat this is not the way a God would want his people to live? I dont remember many. Why were most of them quiet? Because rallying an unthinking population that is the beneficiary of such policy behind the twin banners of racism, religion and race can be a very powerful thing. Every dictator did it. But it is also wrong. But as the saying goes, it is very difficult to ask a thief to call a policeman.
Let me clue you in. The minorities are not suddenly overly sensitive. Its that they either feel safe enough to voice their objections, or they feel they have subsidized a malignant entity long enough or the last fiasco was just too much. Or a combination thereof.
Malays make us feel unsafe when they tell us our children are not entitled to university seats, when they stress that they have Allah given and approved privileges civilized people would refuse, when they organize mobs when they cannot deal with reality, when they keep telling us how we should feel, or when we should toe the line just so they are not offended by being reminded we are all equal. The Malay is used to imposing their will on others, to the point where it permeates policy and law, and covers everything from national asset acquisiton, jobs, contracts, you name it. It makes us feel unsafe. IN short, the minorities feel unsafe when they are told how to react. But it does not weaken us. Subsidies to not weaken the ones paying for it. Quite the opposite.
The good old days were terrifying. Everyone was too scared to speak up. That was then. Perhaps today, the Malay will recognize that merit has its place even among apartheid practitioners and there has to be honor among thieves.
Its not that suddenly people dislike Najib. No one likes a parasite. Not even the Malay themselves. Dont expect us to. Alan S Tan, studied at Pennsylvania State University
