PETALING JAYA: Lim Kit Siang has criticised Umno for claiming that it should not be blamed for scandal-hit 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
"It is quite naive for Umno leaders to believe that they can wash Umno’s hand off the 1MDB scandal when Umno has not renounced the 1MDB scandal and over RM400mil 1MDB monies ended up in Umno's hands," the DAP adviser alleged on his blog post on Saturday (Nov 3).
He said this in reference to Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan who claimed that it was "unfair, unreasonable and illogical" for any party to continue blaming Umno for 1MDB, adding that the party was innocent and had no involvement with any of 1MDB’s operations or transactions.
"Is Mohamad Hassan saying it is fair, appropriate and logical that 32 million Malaysians and future generations should pay for the RM50bil 1MDB scandal, when it was the sole creation of the Umno/Barisan Nasional kleptocrats?" he asked.
.He claimed this was because RM400mil of 1MDB funds was disbursed into various Umno organisations and personalities.
"Why didn’t Mohamad make such a statement before the 14th General Election on May 9, 2018 when Umno and Barisan Nasional leaders thought that the sun will never set for Umno/Barisan?" he said.
Lim also questioned Mohamad whether he was prepared to be the first Umno leader to denounce former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and the then Cabinet for the 1MDB scandal.
Lim added that many steps needed to be taken before Umno can "wash its hands" off the 1MDB scandal.
"The steps that must be taken include condemnation of Najib and the 1MDB scandal by Umno leaders as well as an Umno General Assembly resolution to formally condemn and denounce Najib and the 1MDB scandal," he said.
Lim also chided the Umno members in Parliament who had jeered at Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng during the tabling of Budget 2019.
He said the jeering showed that Parliament was divided between the MPs who supported the new government in fighting corruption and the Opposition MPs who defended Najib and the 1MDB scandal.- Star
