JHO LOW, OF ALL PEOPLE, CRIES FOUL AS MAHATHIR’S GOVT MOVES TO FREEZE 7 OF HIS FATHER’S BANK ACCOUNTS WORTH RM48 MILLION: ‘THE MANY GOVTS IN OVER A DECADE HAVE NOT’ – DOES JHO MEAN THE LAWLESS & KLEPTOCRATIC NAJIB REGIME – BUT OF COURSE, THIEVES WOULD PROTECT THIEVES

A spokesman for Mr. Low, through his legal team, issued the following statement regarding the Malaysian government’s alleged civil forfeiture action against Mr. Low’s family:
The media reports on the alleged actions that the Mahathir regime are now seeking to freeze bank accounts purportedly linked to Mr. Low, after recently attempting to suddenly summarily seize their family home of 20 years which the many governments in over a decade have not, clearly demonstrate the regime’s persistent strategy of harassment and political persecution against their perceived opponents by any means necessary.
Once again, the Mahathir regime has ignored the rule of law, and in a clear abuse of power is seeking to exploit the attorney general’s office and police force to attack opponents and do Mahathir regime’s personal bidding.
This is yet another example of Mahathir regime’s trial by media and is further evidence that it is simply not possible to receive a fair trial in Malaysia. -END

Govt seeks to freeze RM48m in Jho Low’s father’s accounts

KUALA LUMPUR : The government today filed a civil forfeiture action against Penang businessman Tan Sri Larry Low Hock Peng to freeze seven of his banking accounts here, said to be worth RM48 million.
According to sources familiar with the case, the money that the government is seeking to freeze and recover is believed to be from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
“Three of the seven bank accounts are said to be fixed deposit accounts.
“We believe that the monies were transferred from foreign companies that is said to be done by Hock Peng’s son Low Taek Jho or better known as Jho Low,” the source told theedgemarkets.com on condition of anonymity.
The government made the application for civil forfeiture under Section 56 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, which allows the government to forfeit a property without a prosecution.
Media reports in January said police are looking for Hock Peng and his wife Goh Gaik Ewe.
Bloomberg reported Hock Peng and Jho Low’s associate Eric Tan had been named by the police as part of their probe into the state fund that lies at the centre of a massive scandal that ensnared Goldman Sachs Group Inc and prompted investigations across the globe.
It is understood that the documents related to the forfeiture action against Hock Peng were filed today. A case management date will be fixed by the court either tomorrow (March 29) or on Monday (April 1).
Sources indicate that Bukit Aman Head of Special Investigation Division of the Anti-Money-Laundering Team Supt Foo Wei Min had affirmed an affidavit for the purpose of the forfeiture.
Besides the bank accounts, it was reported that the authorities are also attempting to seize Jho Low’s Penang home. -https://ift.tt/2CbIXVO
