Anwar pledges support for Dr M as feud with Johor palace escalates

SANDAKAN POLLS | PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has pledged support for Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad with regard to the latter locking horns with the Johor palace.
Anwar also said the issue was not personal.
"The issue is not personal. The prime minister wants to ensure the constitutional spirit is observed and I think we are with him on that,” he told reporters today.
Anwar was speaking in Sandakan after a campaign walkabout with Vivian Wong, the DAP candidate for this Saturday's by-election.
Yesterday, Mahathir described Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim as “stupid” and a “little boy.”
The premier said this when asked to comment on Tunku Ismail saying that the good deeds of his father Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, such as giving land to the people and government, were not highlighted.
This came in the wake of a revelation that a plot of federal land, earmarked for the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS), was transferred to the ruler.
Sultan Ibrahim said thereafter that he was prepared to surrender the land without cost.
Yesterday, Johor PKR chief Hassan Abdul Karim urged both Mahathir and the state palace to refrain from open confrontation.
'Wong has been working hard'
Anwar's first stop on the campaign trail for Wong was the Ramadan bazaar in the Sandakan town centre.
The PKR leader is also scheduled to visit two mosques for iftar and terawih prayers, before ending the night at a ceramah in Bandar Prima.
"Wong has been working hard," he said.
"My standard advice is that she has to meet every single voter, talk to them,  understand their aspirations, and promise to bring up the issues affecting the common people of Sandakan to Parliament, the state government and the federal government.
"I believe with her qualifications and her youthful energy, she will be able to perform well."
In this Saturday's polls, Wong will go up against PBS' Linda Tsen, and three independents – Hamzah Abdullah, Chia Siew Yong and Sulaiman Abdul Samad. - Mkini
