PAS member remanded for allegedly slandering minister
A PAS member was detained in Kota Bharu today to facilitate an investigation into the alleged dissemination of misinformation on social media.
The arrest of the 55-year old is said to be linked to a Facebook post that purportedly slanders a minister.
When contacted, Kota Bharu police chief Abdul Rahim Daud confirmed the arrest.
"The (suspect) was indeed arrested today, and has been remanded for two days.
"That’s what I can confirm," he told Malaysiakini.
The investigation is believed to be under Section 500 of the Penal Code that deals with criminal defamation, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 that pertains to improper use of network facilities.
A Kelantan PAS source said the suspect has no official position in PAS, and is only an ordinary member of Unit Amal.
Earlier in the day, speculation was rife on social media that an officer working at the office of Panchor assemblyperson Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah’s office had been arrested
Amar denied this when contacted, however.
"No (officers have been arrested)," said the deputy Kelantan menteri besar.
"This (the speculation) is the work of people with too much time on their hands." - Mkini
