KUALA LUMPUR: Education Minister Maszlee Malik has labelled citizens who do not know what the Jalur Gemilang looks like as traitors, following the gaffe involving the wrong Malaysian flag being displayed at a basketball tournament recently.
He said such ignorance among those who claimed to be Malaysian was unforgivable.
“It’s neither idiotic nor ignorant, but should instead be seen as treacherous,” he said when winding up the debate on the Supply Bill 2020 for his ministry at the Dewan Rakyat.
The Malaysia Basketball Association (Maba) ignited controversy after displaying a Malaysian flag with a five-point version of the 14-point star during the opening ceremony of a recent tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
They have since apologised over the gaffe and its president, Lua Choon Hann, has gone on indefinite leave from today in the midst of a probe by the authorities.
The issue was raised by Tanah Merah MP Ikmal Hisyam Abdul Aziz who said there were quarters who still did not know what the Malaysian flag looked like even after 62 years of independence.
RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) meanwhile attempted to link the five-point star to the one featured on MCA’s logo, earning the ire of party president Wee Ka Siong.
Wee, who is Ayer Hitam MP, said he never agreed with those who disrespected the Jalur Gemilang.
“Don’t politicise it. Call out what is wrong.
“Jelutong didn’t read the newspapers; he has apologised. Don’t make wild allegations if you haven’t read the news just to attack us (MCA),” he said, referring to Lua. - FMT
