Dr M to consider meeting Muhyiddin
LANGKAWI: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he would consider meeting Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for a reconciliation talk if he ditches “corrupt Umno allies” in his new government.
The former prime minister said he had received a letter from Muhyiddin seeking a meeting.
“I have not met him. Why should I meet him unless he is ready to get rid of the corrupt Umno people?
“Even then, I will have to consider it first,” he was reported as saying by news portals after meeting Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Kedawang branch members here yesterday.
Dr Mahathir, who is also Langkawi MP, said it was difficult to fulfil the wishes of party grassroots if he and Muhyiddin did work together again, as the latter was willing to work with Umno leaders.
“I can’t work with people who have been charged in court with stealing billions of ringgit.
“I have always said I will accept Umno members joining Bersatu. They must quit Umno and apply to join Bersatu. However, Muhyiddin is ready to accept the party en bloc, including those charged,” he said.
In Petaling Jaya, Bersatu supreme council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan said Muhyiddn had written a letter to Dr Mahathir asking for a meeting between the two after they split over working with Umno to form a new government.
“Now we are just waiting for Tun Mahathir to give us a date to meet.
“We hope that Tun Mahathir will meet (Muhyiddin) as soon as possible,” he said.
Wan Saiful said Muhyiddin, who is Bersatu president, told him about the letter during their meeting last Friday.
He also expressed hope that the Bersatu leaders would once again unite and work together in peace.
“The majority of Bersatu members want the party leadership to unite.
“Let us urge and appeal our top leaders to make peace and to cooperate with each other,” he said, adding that Bersatu was built on the strength of Dr Mahathir, Muhyiddin and Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.
“I hope we would stop disseminating statements or organising events that will not help to bring peace. There is no need to go to the local or foreign media to divide the party further.
“Let us solve (problems) internally with the spirit of being in one family.
“In such a situation, holding prayer events to pray for the reconciliation of our leaders would be more beneficial,” said Wan Saiful. - Star
