UC Irvine, Other UCs Cancel In-Person Classes Over Coronavirus Outbreak

On Tuesday, March 10, UC Irvine canceled all in-person classes for the rest of the school year due to the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

In a statement released at 4:25 PM on March 10, it was announced that final examinations for the winter quarter of instruction will be administered online, as the university transitions into a “remote learning mode for Spring Quarter.”

The statement, issued by UCI’s Chancellor Howard Gillman writes: “Students living on campus are strongly encouraged to return to their off-campus residences and, if possible, and to stay at home during the Spring quarter.”

Additionally, all UCI Athletic events will be held as closed competitions without spectators, and campus events with over 100 people, will be cancelled.

Thomas M. Vasich, Director of Media Relations for UCI’s Strategic Communications & Public Affairs department, told NextShark that as of March 10, “every UC campus, other than UC Merced, has done so, that I am aware of,” adding “I know today UCLA and UC Riverside also followed what we’re doing.”

Here’s the full list of UC schools that are transitioning into an online format: UC Irvine, UC Los Angeles, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC San Diego, UC Santa Cruz, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Riverside. As of the time of writing, other schools in California that have cancelled in-person classes due to the virus, include Stanford University, the University of Southern California, San Jose State University, Santa Clara University and Palo Alto University, according to Forbes.
