Viveka wins ATC scholarship and says it’s all for dad

S Viveka is a recipient of the ATC Cares 2020 Scholarship Fund.
PETALING JAYA: S Viveka has always been the kind of person to extend a helping hand to someone in need. And while studying for her STPM examinations recently, the 20-year-old discovered her passion for law.
However, the former SMK (P) Sri Aman student had her reservations about furthering her studies, mostly because she knew her family could ill afford the cost of studying law.
Viveka’s father, M Santhamogan is a single parent who works long hours as a sales representative and Viveka was more than aware of the constant struggle he faced making ends meet every month.
“I had been thinking of taking up a job to help my father, but he wanted me to study first,” she said.
Fortunately, Viveka’s father came to learn about the latest scholarship programme being offered at Advance Tertiary College (ATC).
S Viveka wants to succeed so she can take over the responsibility of caring for her father, M Santhamogan.
The ATC Cares 2020 Scholarship Fund was set up to help students like her from bottom 40 (B40) families, receive 100% scholarships on their tuition fees for at least one year.
Viveka, who will be taking her Bachelor of Law at ATC says the scholarship will lighten her family’s financial burden considerably.
“It will really help reduce my father’s burden and allow us to save more money. At the end of it, I hope to become a successful lawyer so I can take care of my father as he has looked after me all these years.”
ATC CEO Kevin Leong told FMT they were happy that they could help Viveka and other students like her in the same conundrum.
“We developed this scholarship because it’s been a tough year for many people, especially those who have lost their jobs and seen their incomes slashed after Covid-19,” he said, adding that ATC wanted to do their part in giving back to those most in need of financial assistance.
He said he believed the ATC Cares 2020 scholarship fund will help ease the financial burden of families whose children want to further their studies.
The scholarship fund caters to students from B40 families with a household income of under RM4,000.
It is applicable to all courses offered by ATC at its Kuala Lumpur and Penang campuses for the June and July 2020 intake.
Aside from the ATC Cares 2020 scholarship fund, the college which is an affiliate of the University of London in the United Kingdom, also has academic excellence and sports achievement scholarship programmes.
Leong said the college hoped that the ATC Cares 2020 scholarship fund will help deserving Malaysians in some way, especially those who have been hit hard financially.

“We don’t want anyone to give up on their dreams of furthering their studies because of financial hardship.” - FMT
