Recent political affairs to be raised at Umno council gathering
PETALING JAYA: Recent political developments, including Covid-19, will be brought up during Umno’s Supreme Council meeting tomorrow, says party information chief Sharil Suffian Hamdan.
He confirmed that the crucial meeting, which was scheduled via video conferencing on Saturday, would be held in Pahang instead of Kuala Lumpur.
“This is to allow members to attend the meeting as opposed to holding it in Kuala Lumpur, where the conditional movement control order makes it hard for them to travel,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Shahril added that the meeting, set for 3pm at a venue which had yet to be confirmed, would discuss recent political issues such as Umno’s cooperation with Perikatan Nasional and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s alleged claim of support from Umno MPs.
“I am sure that all will be discussed, but I’m hoping that we will also discuss things that matter to the rakyat,” he added.
Among the other issues to be raised, he noted, were Umno’s proposals for economic recovery and Covid-19.
The meeting comes in the wake of Anwar’s audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong last Tuesday to show that he had “formidable and convincing” support of lawmakers to form a new government, although he did not provide the numbers to back his claim.
On the same day, Umno’s political bureau decided at a meeting that Umno should give “fresh terms” to the Perikatan government if it wanted to pursue a formal political cooperation with the party.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said at the time that Umno would consider withdrawing its support for Perikatan if the conditions were not met. - Star
