Music group files police report against Karyawan over defamation
PETALING JAYA: Public Performance Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PPM) today lodged a police report against the Malaysian Artistes’ Association (Karyawan) for defamation.
PPM chairman Rosmin Hashim said the company would also lodge a complaint to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) against Karyawan president Freddie Fernandez, who is also a member of the MACC advisory panel, for abuse of power.
He added that another complaint was also brought up with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
FMT previously reported on Oct 3 that close to RM30 million in royalties – owed to recording artistes, musicians and performers – was lying idle with two companies authorised to distribute the payments.
On Oct 6, Fernandez had requested for MACC to investigate four companies, one of which was PPM, over unpaid royalties and alleged corruption.
Rosmin said PPM had denied the allegations in an earlier statement, as it had no authority under the Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation (MyIPO) to distribute royalties to performers.
He added that MyIPO had also clarified the performer royalty issue in a statement on their Facebook page on Oct 26.
“PPM is only mandated to distribute royalties collected to its recording company members based on its stated distribution policies.
“We view the intentionally inaccurate and wrongful statements made against PPM in Karyawan’s media statements as being defamatory and a misuse of network services.”
Rosmin stressed that all royalties collected by PPM during the time it was appointed a licensing agent had been remitted to performer licensing bodies for them to distribute to their respective members. - FMT
