PKR MP: Muhyiddin lost majority support, should seek audience with Agong
The withdrawal of support by Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub for Muhyiddin Yassin's government means that the prime minister should seek an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to inform that he no longer commands the confidence of the Dewan Rakyat majority.
PKR's Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim said that following Ahmad Jazlan's announcement, the number of parliamentarians who support Muhyiddin and his Perikatan Nasional (PN) government is only 110.
"In this situation, Muhyiddin has lost the majority in the Dewan Rakyat, and the PN government has collapsed.
"Based on Article 46 of the Federal Constitution, there are 222 members of the House of Representatives elected through elections. Two MPs have died, namely the MPs for Batu Sapi, Sabah and Gerik, Perak. This brings the total number of members of the Dewan Rakyat for the 14th term of Parliament to 220.
"The total support for the Pagoh MP is 110, meaning that Muhyiddin and the government do not have a majority in the Dewan Rakyat," he said in a statement today.
Hassan pointed out that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah appointed Muhyiddin as prime minister on March 1, 2020 based on Article 43 (2) (a) of the Federal Constitution, which in the King's opinion, the Pagoh MP has the support of the Dewan Rakyat majority.
"During the 10 months that Muhyiddin has been the prime minister, he has avoided no-confidence motions against him in Parliament.
"Even the confidence motions for him as prime minister brought by government MPs were not given a chance to be tabled," he added.
Hassan said that the closest thing that can be interpreted as a vote of confidence in Muhyiddin was through Budget 2021.
"The highest number of votes achieved by the PN government in support of the budget was obtained on Dec 15, during the split vote for the third reading of Budget 2021.
"The PN government received 111 votes while the opposition obtained 108. The 111 votes included support from Ahmad Jazlan," he added.
Yesterday, Ahmad Jazlan announced his decision to withdraw support from the PN government at a press conference in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
"I hereby announce my decision to withdraw my support for the PN government which is led by Muhyiddin," he said.
Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah had also previously voiced opposition to Muhyiddin but thus far abstained from voting against the government in Parliament.
Hassan drew attention to Article 43 (4) of the Federal Constitution, which states: "If the prime minister no longer has the trust of the majority of the members of the Dewan Rakyat, then the prime minister must resign from the cabinet unless at his request Parliament is dissolved by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong."
He said the provisions of the Federal Constitution are very clear on this.
"As a member of the Dewan Rakyat, I call on Muhyiddin to abide by the provisions of the laws of our country, the Federal Constitution, which is to immediately obtain consent and seek an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
"The honourable Pagoh MP while taking the oath of office as the prime minister has pledged to defend the Federal Constitution. This is the time to prove that," he added. - Mkini
