Don’t add to SPM students’ agony, says doctor

PETALING JAYA: Two doctors have rejected a suggestion to delay the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination by two weeks because of a recent surge in Covid-19 infections.

Former deputy health minister Dr Lee Boon Chye said the examination had already been delayed for over 100 days. “An additional two weeks would only prolong the agony of waiting and it would not add significant value in the preparation,” Lee told FMT.

The SPM examination, the school-leaving examination for pupils in Form Five, is scheduled to be held on Feb 22.

Lee said Covid-19 vaccinations would not have a significant effect on the pandemic for at least three months after the mass vaccinations began.

Lee said the education ministry should prepare for a re-examination after the SPM results had been announced.

“This will allow some students who failed the initial examination or those students who skipped the initial examination for various reasons to be given a second chance,” he said.

Another doctor, Vikkineshwaran Siva Subramaniam, suggested that SPM students and invigilators be screened before the students are allowed to sit for the examination.

A candidate with health problems should take the exam in a closely monitored setting to ensure they receive adequate protection during their exam, he said.

Former prime minister Najib Razak had suggested last week that the SPM examination be delayed for two weeks as students and parents were worried over the lack of time to prepare.

He said a postponement would allow examination students to take extra lessons after the Chinese New Year public holidays. - FMT
