YOURSAY | How can an appeal to the king on emergency be a threat?

YOURSAY | 'MPs are representing us - the rakyat. Our Agong has a right to hear what the rakyat want.'

Anwar: Does Hamzah understand Bahasa?

OrangeJaguar9341: This is simply a case of Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin throwing his weight around and utter abuse of authority for him to state that the opposition leader would be probed for allegedly inciting the people and threatening national security.

Resorting to threats when you have lost your majority and don't have a leg to stand on is downright pathetic.

What's more, when PKR president Anwar Ibrahim appeals to the king's wisdom and kindness, the opposition leader is threatened with sedition investigations.

In the meantime, the Communications and Multimedia Ministry says it has opened "dedicated channels" for the public to share their views and provide feedback on the proclamation of emergency.

But when opposition MPs provide feedback, it's sedition.

Heron: When a long-standing leader with Anwar’s experience deems it fit to appeal to the present government with a “hope” that it would “not resort to threats”, then the political atmosphere and circumstances must surely be troubling.

Especially so as public confidence on the performance of this government on a number of socio-economic and political matters is waning.

Public perception also seems to indicate that the Finance Ministry is not successful in exuding confidence as the national economy continues to remain stuck in an unsuccessful strive to come out of a prolonged economic slowdown.

The PN government should perhaps consider seeking the services of some former ministers (health, finance, economy?) via some reasonable form of collaboration under the emergency.

The present situation perhaps requires a united effort to addressing national priorities instead of continuing with factional politics.

Pegasus: The MPs are the representatives of the people. They are the voice of the people.

What is so wrong of Anwar going to our Agong to seek a reconsideration of the emergency rule? That’s what the majority of the people want.

The MPs are only representing us - the rakyat. Our Agong has a right to hear what His Majesty’s rakyat want. Anwar isn’t inciting anyone.

Let’s be fair. There are two sides to a coin, so let our Agong hear us out and let him decide if the emergency rule should be lifted.

PurpleRabbit1582: The emergency is an overreach of power where the PM and the cabinet need not face a vote of confidence for the next six months as Parliament has been suspended.

It’s funny how after the emergency was called. They are accusing opponents of the government of sedition and treason as if they are the country themselves, even though nobody voted for them to be our government.

PinkCougar9549: Hamzah is not fit to be a national leader. He may do well as a ‘penghulu’ (village head).

Anyone without multicultural, multiracial and multireligious thinking and tolerance is not qualified to be a leader in the federal government.

The country is going down the drain, this is only the start. If this cabinet persists, I estimate in the next three years, we will see our debt-to-GDP ratio going way above 60 percent.

Very soon, our currency will drop further, imported inflation is expected to spike and government revenue to drop.

As usual, this government is only good when it comes to spending money but not generating productive revenue.

Small and medium-sized enterprises used to contribute big to our revenue, but now probably 80 percent of these SMEs will pay zero tax in 2021. Expect more retrenchment to come in the second half of 2021.

Apa Nama: Hamzah is likely experiencing the long Covid-19. I hope you understand what long Covid-19 is.

By the way, Anwar, you need to use a different approach to counter this emergency court case.

Dr Raman Letchumanan: Dear Anwar, please be careful, don't criticise Bahasa Malaysia. Anything on race, religion and language is seditious, in whatever context you say it because everything is contentious and alarming as per their warped interpretation.

All it needs is a few police reports from the ever-itchy ruling race for the authorities to spring into action. You may get out of this because you have a capital A, but not many unfortunate citizens have that privilege.

But despite that, Anwar, your retort is too soft and grandfatherly. How to become an effective opposition leader like this?

Bluemountains: Hamzah certainly understands Bahasa. But he must be able to separate government business from party business to avoid a conflict of interest, although the line may be very blurred.

More often than not, it is easier said than done when emotions come into play.

Iphonezours: Anwar, the entire PN government is incompetent and due to its incompetency and mismanagement, the country is failing to curb the Covid-19 pandemic and the economy is going down the drain.

The government has no choice but to come out with its rosy side of the story or amazing numbers that the economy is still intact. However, Malaysians are not dumb to be taken for a ride.

BrownFalcon4984: We have to be careful as PN is now pushing the emergency law for its own benefit. Soon it will use it to abuse its authority.

The Agong and the rulers should consider cancelling the emergency immediately after the movement control order (MCO). - Mkini
