Dr M: Pejuang won't support PN govt just to get party registration
Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) has no intention of supporting the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government in exchange for its registration as a formal political party.
The Pejuang chairperson told The Malaysian Insight that he will never cut such a deal.
“No. No negotiation, we will not support them," said Mahathir, who expressed the belief that Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin rejected Pejuang’s application for political reasons, and that his actions were “a fraud and violation of the law”.
Pejuang’s application to be registered with the Registry of Societies (ROS) was denied even though the party claimed it had met all of ROS' conditions.
“It is done to block opponents from contesting in the coming general election.
“We have followed all the conditions set up by ROS. Even if the condition is unreasonable, we have followed it.
“ROS seems to have no objection because we have met all the conditions," he said, adding that when he met with Hamzah, the Bersatu man merely asked if he was sure he wanted to form a party.
The nonagenarian claimed that when he asked Hamzah for approval, the home minister replied "later".
"Until now, there is no answer. They hope to win the general election by preventing the opposition from contesting,” Mahathir alleged.
He recalled his experience leading Bersatu into the 14th general election (GE14) despite efforts to hamper its registration that led to the party contesting under the PKR flag.
The Pakatan Harapan government collapsed when Mahathir attempted to form a unity government with himself at the helm in clear violation of the electoral agreement to hand over the premiership to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
Pejuang received a warning from the ROS to stop all party activities and cease usage of its logo.
The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) led by Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was also unsuccessful in its efforts to register the outfit and alleged political interference in the matter. - Mkini
