Probe opened after 206 reports lodged over opposition protest, says IGP
PETALING JAYA: Police have opened an investigation into Monday’s gathering by opposition MPs at Dataran Merdeka, inspector-general of police (IGP) Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said tonight.
He added that 206 police reports were lodged nationwide on the matter.
According to Acryl Sani, the police will be investigating the matter under Section 269 of the Penal Code for a negligent act that may likely spread an infection of any disease dangerous to life.
“We are also investigating the matter under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (PAA).
“The police will call in the individuals involved to facilitate the investigation,” he said in a statement.
Malaysiakini reported that eight MPs have been called up, namely DAP’s Hannah Yeoh (Segambut), Lim Lip Eng (Kepong), Kasthuri Patto (Batu Kawan) and Tony Pua (Damansara); PKR’s Fuziah Salleh (Kuantan) and Fahmi Fadzil (Lembah Pantai); Muda’s Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muar); and Maszlee Malik (Simpang Renggam).
On Monday, a total of 107 MPs from the various opposition parties attempted to march to Parliament from Dataran Merdeka to protest and call for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and his Cabinet to resign.
The march was shortlived as Federal Reserve Unit personnel armed with riot shields blocked them from going further, though opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said the MPs had made their point.
On Tuesday evening, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad admitted that he should not have joined the gathering due to the lack of physical distancing by all the MPs present at the protest. - FMT
