PETALING JAYA: The number of daily Covid-19 deaths in the Klang Valley is expected to drop over the next two to three weeks once a “huge backlog” of reported deaths is cleared, health minister Khairy Jamaluddin has said.

He added that because of this backlog, the deaths reported daily by his ministry do not include those which occurred in the past 24 hours.

“There is a huge backlog of deaths because we have to confirm whether the deceased truly died of Covid-19 or not,” Khairy said at a press conference today while on a visit to Kota Kinabalu.

“There’s a long list, and there’s a huge number in the ministry’s backlog.

According to Malaysiakini, Khairy said that he does have a list of deaths reported by date and would reveal more on Wednesday.

On the situation in Sabah, Khairy also expected the number of deaths there to fall in the next two to three weeks.

He also called upon community leaders to play a larger role in the health of those around them as a way to mitigate brought-in-dead cases, as many were not registered as patients in public health facilities.

“To solve this problem, we have to intensify the role of community leaders and neighbours,” The Vibes portal quoted him as saying. “People can check in on their (sick) neighbours to see how they’re doing when (the latter) develop symptoms or their sickness gets worse.” - FMT
