Amnesty launches online petition for Nagaenthran’s life
Human rights group Amnesty International Malaysia has launched an online petition campaign to urge Singapore President Halimah Yaakob to halt the execution of the Malaysian national Nagaenthran K Dharmalingam, which is scheduled for Nov 10.
It also wants a moratorium on all executions as a step towards the full abolition of the death penalty.
“Taking people’s lives is a cruel act in itself but to hang a person convicted merely of carrying drugs, amid chilling testimony that he might not even fully understand what is happening to him, is despicable,” the group said on Twitter yesterday, referring to Nagaenthran reported intellectual disabilities.
It urged members of the public to write an appeal to Halimah to demand a commutation of his sentence and a moratorium on executions through its website.
Nagaenthran was sentenced to death in 2010 for trafficking 42.72g of heroin.
The Singapore Home Affairs Ministry contended that Nagaenthran was not mentally “substantially impaired” when he committed the offence and had understood that what he was doing was a crime.
However, his family’s lawyer N Surendran disputed this, noting that the court found Nagaenthran to have “borderline intellectual functioning and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), has a full-scale IQ score of 69 and that his executive functioning skills are impaired”.
Previously, another petition campaign was launched online to urge Halimah to pardon Nagaenthran, which has garnered more than 54,000 signatures as of last night.
However, a formal petition to Halimah for a pardon was unsuccessful. - Mkini
