Idris, Nor Azman on PKR and Amanah's list of candidates - sources

PKR and Amanah are expected to accept two former Malacca Umno assemblypersons - Idris Haron and Nor Azman Hassan - to re-contest in the upcoming state election, according to party sources.

Sources told Malaysiakini that the two Harapan parties are expected to each field one former assemblyperson, Idris for PKR and Nor Azman for Amanah, leaving out former Bersatu Telok Mas assemblyperson Noor Effandi Ahmad.

It is unclear whether the duo will be fielded to defend their seats - Idris in Sungai Udang and Nor Azman in Pantai Kundor.

Of the four former assemblypersons whose defections from BN had triggered the state polls, Harapan had previously rejected former DAP Pengkalan Batu assemblyperson Norhizam Hassan Baktee.

Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim at a press conference in Malacca tonight indicated that PKR and Amanah will each accept one former assemblyperson, ahead of a formal announcement on candidates.

"In the context of the Malay people, we must understand that Umno claims they currently have over three million members, and PAS has over one million.

"We (need to) take a stand whether to outrightly reject them (the trio) or to give them room under the condition that they accept our main principle, our diversity and principles of good governance," said the PKR president.

"Therefore, based on the considerations, from the four, as far as I understand, PKR has chosen one (assemblyperson) and Amanah has chosen one.

"This will be finalised by later tonight or the latest by tomorrow morning before we make an announcement," he added.

Ahead of the official announcement, PKR sources told Malaysiakini that the party is expected to replace former Machap Jaya assemblyperson Ginie Lim, while PKR information chief Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin is slated to contest in Paya Rumput.

Meanwhile, Anwar also reiterated that initial discussions on cooperation with the defectors were held among Malacca Harapan leaders before involvement from the parties' top leadership.

He said while there were concerns raised even from within Harapan's top leadership, Malacca Harapan chief Adly Zahari had argued that the four defectors had attempted to return Harapan's mandate.

In early October, Idris secured support from Harapan to form a new state government, but his gambit backfired when Malacca governor Mohd Ali Rustam dissolved the state legislative assembly instead.

Anwar tonight claimed that the issue of party hopping no longer arise with the dissolution of the state assembly.

"We from PKR and Amanah are of the view that the issue of party hopping no longer arise, with the state assembly dissolved.

"They (the defectors) are no longer assemblypersons. They now need a new mandate, so it is up to the parties to accept them or otherwise," he said.

The DAP, which had previously rejected any move to accept the defectors, had earlier today announced its line-up of eight candidates featuring six incumbents and two newcomers. - Mkini
