EARLY SIGNS THAT CANCER IS GROWING IN YOUR BODY
Tests alone are not sufficient to protect you from cancer – listening to your body and recognizing the signs on time is equally important if you want to eliminate the deadly disease. Here are the signs of cancer most people overlook:
- Chronic cough or chest pain
Cancer types such as leukemia or lung cancer can cause coughs or symptoms mimicking bronchitis. Many lung cancer patients have reported chest pain that extends into the shoulder or arm as one of the earliest signs of the disease.
- Wheezing or shortness of breath
A wheezing sound from the lungs and shortness of breath are some of the most common symptoms of lung cancer.
- Frequent fever or infections
These symptoms are often a sign of leukemia. Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the blood cells in the bone marrow, which results in production of abnormal white blood cells. This incapacitates the body’s infection-fighting ability and makes you more prone to infections and diseases.
- Difficulty swallowing
Difficulty swallowing is often a sign of esophageal or throat cancer, but can also be a symptom of lung cancer.
- Swollen lymph nodes
Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, underarms or groin area indicate lymphatic system changes which may be caused by cancer.
- Bruises or bleeding that won’t stop
This is a sign of a problem with the red blood cells or blood platelets which is most often caused by leukemia. As time passes, leukemia cells overcrowd your red blood cells and affect their ability to carry oxygen to the tissues and make the blood clot properly.
- Weakness and fatigue
Sudden fatigue or weakness is a sign of almost any type of cancer, and usually comes accompanying other symptoms. If you’re suddenly feeling weak without explanation and you’re still tired even after resting overnight, you need to see a doctor and make sure it’s nothing serious.
- Bloating and abdominal weight gain
Ovarian cancer patients have reported sudden abdominal weight gain which continued to go on for a longer period.
- Feeling full and having no appetite
Loss of appetite and feeling full even after eating a small amount of food is often a sign of ovarian cancer and should never be overlooked.
- Pelvic and abdominal pain
Pain and cramps in the pelvis and abdomen often accompany bloating as symptoms of ovarian cancer. Besides this type of cancer, leukemia might also be responsible for abdominal pain.
- Blood in the stool
This is a sign of colorectal cancer and should be immediately checked by a doctor.
- Sudden weight loss
If you’re losing weight without a diet, it may be a sign of stomach cancer, or an indication that the disease has spread to the liver.
- Upset stomach or stomachache
Stomach cramps or stomachache are often an indication of colorectal cancer.
- Red, swollen and sore breasts
These symptoms are a clear indication of breast cancer, which is why doctors recommend getting your breasts checked immediately after noticing any kind of changes on your breasts.
- Nipple changes
If your nipples are suddenly flattened, inverted or turned sideways, you need to visit your doctor who can determine if you’re suffering from breast cancer.
- Heavy and painful periods\bleeding between periods
This is often a sign of endometrial or uterine cancer, so take an ultrasound scan if you’re suspecting cancer.
- Swelling in the face
Facial swelling or puffiness may be a sign of lung cancer. It occurs when small cell lung tumors block blood vessels in the chest, preventing blood from flowing freely in the head and face.
- A sore skin lump that doesn’t heal
Any odd-looking spots and lumps that don’t heal over time may be a sign of melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, all different types of skin cancer.
- Nail changes
It might not seem very important to you, but any kind of change you see on the nails can indicate different types of cancer. A brown or black streak under the nails is a sign of skin cancer, while clubbing can be a sign of lung cancer. White, pale nails usually indicate liver cancer.
- Pain in the back or low right side
Pain in the back is often among the first reported symptoms of liver cancer, but it can also be a sign of breast cancer which has spread to the spine or ribs. Regardless of your gender, you must track the changes in your body in order to catch the disease early. The sooner you notice a problem, the higher your chances of survival.
Besides learning to recognize these symptoms, you should also lead a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent the disease. Cancer is a disease which is characterized by uncontrolled growth or spread of abnormal cells and can only be stopped by controlling the growth. The body can do this, but it’s efficiency is affected by your lifestyle. If you are physically active, eat and sleep well and deal with stress reasonably, you can defeat the disease. However, leading an unhealthy lifestyle can hinder the body’s ability to protect itself, which often has a fatal outcome in the case of cancer.
