British theme park closes ride after incident leaves 11-year-old girl ‘in the water’
PA
Drayton Manor theme park has closed one of its major attractions after a child fell in the water.
Details remain sketchy about the incident, but the park, which is located in Staffordshire, confirmed on Twitter that it had closed a ride named Splash Canyon.
In a statement, West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was called to reports “of a patient in the water.” Services, including an air ambulance, were scrambled to the scene at around 2.20 p.m. local time (BST).
Staffordshire Police added that the patient was “believed to be” an 11-year-old girl from the Leicester area. She was airlifted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, the force said, and her parents have been informed.
Splash Canyon is described as a “fast-paced river rapid ride” by Drayton Manor. It first opened in 1993 and riders are swept around a water run in a six-person circular boat. “Anyone under 1.1 metre must be accompanied by an adult,” Drayton’s website states.
