INSPECTOR-GENERAL of Police Khalid Abu Bakar today said Azmin Ali can proceed to take legal action against him, as he will not bow down to pressure from the Selangor menteri besar to arrest Jho Low.

Azmin has sent a notice of demand to Khalid seeking the arrest of Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low, the businessman who has been described as the main conspirator in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal.

Azmin’s lawyer Latheefa Koya said the letter was sent two days ago to compel the IGP to seek the help of Interpol in the arrest and extradition of Low.

Khalid has 14 days to reply to the letter failing which legal action will be taken.

Khalid said he would not respond to Azmin’s demand as investigations into 1MDB were ongoing.

“I do not want to respond to his demand. So, take court action, I will wait… I won’t argue,” he said at the Royal Malaysian Police College in Cheras this evening.

He said Azmin could proceed with the legal action once the demand expired in 14 days.

Latheefa had said her client was acting on the basis that Low was suspected of various offences under the penal code.

She said Malaysia should work with Interpol, of which it was a member and which also had an office here, to issue a Red Notice for Low.

Lawyer N. Surendran said Azmin would initiate court action if the IGP failed to do the necessary.

Low’s whereabouts are unknown despite investigations in several countries linked to 1MDB’s complex international financial transactions.

Low denies any wrongdoing.
