Bersatu newbie Maszlee to take on Gerakan sec-gen in Sg Renggam?

GE14 | Academician Maszlee Malik could possibly be announced as Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for the Johor parliamentary seat of Simpang Renggam.

According to party sources, Maszlee was spotted among those attending a candidates’ briefing yesterday morning at Bersatu headquarters in Petaling Jaya.

The Islamic International University Malaysia academic joined Bersatu on March 12, weeks after fellow academic Wan Saiful Wan Jan entered the party.

If confirmed, Maszlee, a Johor native, will be facing Gerakan secretary-general Liang Teck Meng, who was the latter party’s sole parliamentary seat winner in the previous election in 2013.

The two-term incumbent, who is also the National Water Service Commission (Span) chairperson, defeated then PAS candidate Suhaizan Kaiat by a 5,706 majority in 2013.

Traditionally held by Gerakan, Liang in 2008 took over contesting the seat from former deputy president Kerk Choo Ting.

Simpang Renggam is a seat with Malays forming the majority at 57 percent, and the Chinese and Indian voters at 33 and one percent respectively.

When contacted by Malaysiakini last night over Mazlee’s possible candidacy, Bersatu secretary general Shaharudin Salleh refused to comment.

“Just wait for tomorrow’s announcement for Johor candidates,” he said in a text message.

Meanwhile, Bersatu’s deputy strategy and policy bureau chief Wan Saiful told Malaysiakini that naming Maszlee would be a great choice for Harapan.

“I cannot confirm the nomination, but if he is (chosen), I’m very delighted. Although I’m a member of the supreme council, I was not a part of the discussion for the candidates.

“I was among those who brought him into Bersatu; it will be great to see more professionals like him getting fielded in this general election,” said Wan Saiful when contacted.

Maszlee declined to comment when asked about the matter.

Malaysiakini understands a gag order was issued by party president Muhyiddin Yassin to all candidates until the formal announcement.
