Dr M hopes to find successor in Bersatu soon

INTERVIEW | Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad is hopeful that the party can produce a worthy successor for when he is no longer around.

"We hope talented people will emerge. They may emerge soon and we do encourage those with talent to become leaders.

"In Bersatu there are many young people who show great capabilities," Mahathir told Malaysiakini and Sinar Harian during a joint interview on Thursday.

The 93-year-old said this when asked if there was a succession plan for him within the party.

Asked to elaborate on which young members he saw as having leadership potential, he cited Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and supreme council member Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen as examples.

Mahathir, who is also the prime minister, is expected to hand over the reigns of power to PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim within a few years.

However, it is unclear whether Mahathir would stay on as Bersatu chairperson when the transition takes place.

Speaking on a separate matter, Mahathir said he is not the same person he was during his first stint in office.

"I have changed. I realise that in the past I had full control, and I can sometimes make unilateral decisions. So some people called me a dictator.

"But now I realise that our party is not the dominant party - I have to take into account the views of five parties.

"So support for me depends on how good my suggestions are, I can't act on my own opinion," he said.

He said this happens within the cabinet and in his own party as well, where leadership meetings can drag on for hours because issues are debated at length.

On the contrary, he said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has not changed his ways.

"He still thinks he can get power by playing up race issues. You can't win with race issues now," he said when asked to assess Zahid's performance thus far. - Mkini
