Putrajaya to tweak, not abolish, UUCA

The Education Ministry may table several bills in the Dewan Rakyat to amend laws involving institutions of higher learning next month.
According to Education Minister Maszlee Malik, the cabinet greenlit the bills yesterday to amend laws prohibiting students from taking part in on-campus political activities.
The three laws that will be amended are:
  • Section 15(2)(c) of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971;
  • Section 47(2)(c) of the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996; and,
  • Section 10(2)(c) of the Educational Institutions (Discipline) Act 1976.
"This is in line with the political transformation promoted by the government to strengthen the democratic institution.
"It gives room for university students to speak up and be involved in political activities on campus, while producing all-rounded students who can speak up on current affairs," he said.
Pakatan Harapan's election manifesto stated that the UUCA would be repealed altogether.
This was, however, not addressed in Maszlee's statement. - Mkini
