MY NAME IS BOND – KAYVEAS BOND! HIS PRESIDENCY OF MYPPP STILL IN DISPUTE, BUT KAYVEAS WANTS TO RUN FOR CAMERON HIGHLANDS SEAT

KUANTAN: Since the Election Court nullified Barisan Nasional’s (BN) victory in the Cameron Highlands parliamentary seat, disputed MyPPP president Tan Sri M Kayveas has been receiving a lot of calls to contest if a by-election is held in the constituency.
However, Kayveas is still undecided if he should throw his hat into the ring saying it was still too early as the appeal process has yet to even begin.
He said there has been overwhelming support from the people in Cameron Highlands including the Orang Asli community asking him to consider contesting if a by-election is held.
“I have been serving the people there for more than four years and even after the election (14th General Election), I still go for walkabouts and mingle with the people there. I was even in Cameron Highlands last week….I still have my office in Tanah Rata.
“Frankly, it is still too early and I prefer to wait and see. I do not want to make any hasty decisions on the matter….if I choose to contest (if a by-election is held), then I will have to aim for victory and ensure that I win,” he said when contacted.
Kayveas said he prefers to wait for the appeal process to be completed and the Election Commission (EC) to make an official announcement on the Cameron Highlands parliamentary seat before making a decision.
He said since MyPPP has cut ties with BN, the party should face no problems if it decides to contest the seat and might likely face a three-corner battle against MIC and also DAP.
Prior to GE14, there was a dispute over the Cameron Highlands parliamentary seat between Kayveas and MIC before MIC got the green light to contest the seat since it has been the party’s traditional seat.
Fondly known as “Uncle Bond” among the people in Cameron Highlands, Kayveas, who started making preparations to contest in Cameron Highlands since 2015 was once quoted saying “it will be heartbreaking if they pick someone else to contest here(Cameron Highlands)”.
On Nov 30, the Election Court in Kuala Lumpur declared the Cameron Highlands parliamentary seat vacant after finding that corrupt practices led to the victory of BN candidate, Datuk C Sivarrajh, in GE14.
DAP candidate Manogaran filed a petition in June seeking a declaration that the result for the Cameron Highlands parliamentary election was null and void, as the respondent (Sivarraajh) had violated the Election Offences Act 1954 by allegedly bribing voters among the Orang Asli community in the constituency.
Manogaran claimed that Sivarraajh, who campaigned alongside Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, had paid Orang Asli constituents between RM30 and RM1,000 through several Tok Batins (community chiefs) to ensure that they would vote for BN in the five-cornered fight.
Sivarraajh eventually won the seat with 10,307 votes, while Manogaran garnered 9,710. PAS candidate Wan Mahadir Wan Mahmud polled 3,587 votes, Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s (PSM) B Suresh Kumar (680), and Berjasa candidate Mohd Tahir Kassim (81).
